Katende Anthony lives on Lingilira island in Lake Victoria off the coast of
Jinja. He lives with his mother, 8 other siblings and one orphaned cousin in a 2 room house. The children range in age from 5 to 16 years old.
His mother buys moon fish on the island and brings them to Masese Port for sale. However, there is no business in the rainy season. His mother has recently begun beading to earn additional income. The family was originally from the Soroti area in the east but her husband was shot by the Karamjong in the late 1980s.
Katende goes to day school on the island. He is a good student normally placing 5 out of 25. He likes English, math, sciences, and wants to be a pilot when he grows up. He likes to play soccer with his friends. He helps his mother by fetching water. If he can find a sponsor, he hopes to go to boarding school in Jinja this coming school year.
Annual sponsorship cost is $400 for primary school fees, boarding, uniforms, and basic school supplies.
This amount can be paid in one lump sum, by term at $133 per term, or monthly at $33 per month. Additional optional amounts up to $300 total may be contributed during the calendar year as a special family gift.
