Age – 10
Grade – Primary 5 (Day)
|
Wellbond lives with his mother in Kitgum where they have been staying for over four years now. They rent a hut for about $6 per month. His father was a government soldier who was killed in 2002 while fighting the LRA rebels. His uncle, a businessman, was also killed by the LRA in an ambush in 2001 when he was buying items to sell in the market.
The family came to Kitgum from their original village of Agoro further north. For a while, the two of them lived in an IDP camp there. His mother does beading, and also makes a local brew which generates about $6 of income per month. She hopes that bead sales increase so she can discontinue brewing because it is difficult to find the necessary firewood these days. She hopes to one day be able to open a grocery kiosk near her home.
Wellbond is normally in the upper 20% of students in his class. His favorite subjects are English and math. When he grows up, he wants to be an accountant to teach people how to save money and put it in the bank because “when you keep it in the house, it may be eaten by termites.” When he is not in school, he loves playing football with his friends, and he is a proud owner of a healthy duck who has just started to lay eggs.
